Montell2099 – Q&A

Our fastest PPS reporter Jonathan in New York City had the unique chance to speak to the dope producer Montell2099 (Soundcloud above) face to face and to ask him a whole bunch of questions, both from our team and from other fans we have found by making a call on the web.

Here we go:

First Part – Team Q&A

If you had the opportunity to work with anyone you’d like, who would it be?

Mr. Carmack

Your sound sounds like sex on the beach. Did you ever have sex on the beach?

(Laughs) Nah man

What is your favourite emoticon?

Prayer hands

If you were on an island and could only bring 3 items what would they be?

My laptop, headphones and the laptop charger, if this island has power

Tell us about the PA.

The PA is a little settlement on the outside of the small town I’m from, I consider
myself very lucky to have grown up there. The freedom I had growing up was crazy, we
learn how to drive vehicles as soon as we can walk and talk and could do whatever we
wanted at any time. I give it props because thats where my love for music production
was born, also I want the world to know where I’m from and how beautiful of a place it is.

I see you will be forming a show at the RNV festivial in New Zealand this is a huge gig how do you feel about it?

Excited man! Feel pretty lucky to be doing such a big festival early in my career, shout-outs to the Eastern Bloc Boys for the oppertunity

Your 6 foot 4 inches and you play rugby. Have you ever layed someone the fuck out to no return?

Haha Fosho, its apart of the game 😉

Did you ever find out who the big mac thief was ?

Yo this is some freaky Nardwuar question. (laughs) But no, I didn’t find who took my big mac.

How is your rapping career going for you?

(Laughs) it didn’t work out, im back to producing now.

What’s your favorite 90s jam?

Montell Jordan – This is how we do it haha

On average, how many times a week do you hurt yourself trying to dance in the shower?

Haha I dont dance in the shower, once in a blue moon you might catch me singing tho

What’s the most money you’ve ever drunkenly spent at McDonald’s?

Always stunt when we roll through to McDees, probably 30 dollars haha

What do you do when a baby just stares at you in public? Like, doesn’t even blink,
just maintains intense, aggressive eye contact with their dumb baby face.
What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO IN THIS SITUATION?

Make it cry bro. Make it cry.

What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever unintentionally vomited?

In a wardrobe.

Who do you just hate the most?

I don’t hate anybody haha not my vibe

How many hours after getting paid does it take you to spend your entire pay cheque?

Under 1 hour easy, I make it splash

What does 2099 represent?

It has no meaning at all, for the most part I just came up with it because its unique in the sense that
if you type my name on the internet im the first thing that comes up

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Invisibility, Sneak into thaangs

Of all your pet-peeves, which is the strangest?

Pickles in a burger and pineapple on a pizza, I tried so hard to think of something weird af but couldn’t come up with anything

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

Alcohol

Finally, and this one is important, so please pay attention What do you think cats dream about?

FOOD

Second Part – Fan Questions

How do you create your 808 basslines and how do you do your drum processing? (TJ)

FL piano roll and FL piano roll. It’s cool using the sequencer, I usually get the basic idea of the drums down on the sequencer
then put them all into piano roll, thats where your imagination becomes the best tool.

Where do you get your organic sounding percussions from in songs like “Found” and “Trying”? (Parrish)

I never use percs from just one kit, always try mixing it up. A lot of them are from various kits, majority were from a random percussion
kit my friend LMC gave me, I used a couple from the classic trapaholics kit tho

What is your workflow for creating beats? (Gucci)

More often than not I start off with melodies, I always find that, if there’s something with melodic value, its much easier to find a direction for the beat to go,
usually when I start with drums, it’s a mission and my mind has no idea where to go or what to do next. Then I just keep building ideas around an idea around an idea.
It never stops until you run out of ideas, thats how I know im done.

Will you be voting for Kanye West? (Alec)

I’m in New Zealand but if he did bring up some valid points when running for prezz, I got no problem voting for Yeezus

What DAW do you use and whats your favorite vsts? (JonEcks)

FL Studio and my favourite VST is GMS

What vst effects do you use on your master to get such a clean wide sound? (Bonham Carter)

A limiter and blood overdrive is always on my master, I know it doesn’t sound right but every song I’ve made has been the same.
The other things like wideness come from mixing.

What sample packs do you always go for creating your drums and percussions? (Michael)

For drums and percs I’d say Beatbutcherz, Cardiak and the Boi-1-da kit

How long have you been producing, and did you expect to become this well known and respected as a musician? (Steven)

I’ve been producing for about 4 years now. No not at all, I’m still amazed at how much people have taken to my music

Are you single? And do you like spanish girls? (Stephanie)

Haha yes. Spanish girls are lovely.

How many hours do you spend on a song typically? (Lucus)

It varies a lot, all depends how vivid the idea in my head is. If I’m making a beat and I know exactly what or what type of sound I need when I need it,
a beat could take about 2 hours max. when I’m in that zone. If I can’t do that then I’m usually scrolling my mouse through sounds until something catches my ear,
which takes a bit longer.

Do you plan on going on a tour anytime soon? If so, come to the states! (Amanda)

It’s definitely a goal and a dream, still think it’s a bit to early for that just yet but who knows

Do you use any midi controllers, if so which ones do you have, if you have more then one which one
is your favorite and why? And have you ever done a line off of your controller? (Mikey)

No I don’t have a midi controller, a lot of the times I just use my laptop keyboard for all that stuff

Special thanks for JonEcks for performing excellently on the interview,
